Change / Cancellation Fees for Award Tickets of Major Airline Programs

Changing / cancelling your award tickets could possibly cost a lot !!!

Even you have already used your airline miles to redeem for award tickets, you may have to change or cancel due to emergency situation or other personal issues. Therefore, it is good to know the price you need to pay before calling the airlines to make changes/cancellations. Here is the table showing fees for change/cancellation of major airline programs (assuming no elite status in any of airlines):

Here is the additional information for each airline programs:

(a) Alaska Airlines: No fee when making any kinds of changes / cancellations before 60 days of departure. $125 fee will be charged when making changes / cancellations within 60 days.

(b) ANA: No fee when making date changes (changes needs to be made before 96 hrs of departure). It is not eligible to make origin/destination/route change. 3,000 miles will be charged when making cancellations.

(c) American Airlines: No fee when making any kinds of changes as long as your origin/destination remains the same. $150 fee will be charged when making changes of origin/destination or cancellations, and $25 fee will also be charged for each additional passenger under the same record locator (confirmation).

(d) Air Canada: $100 CAD fee per one-way will be charged when making any kinds of changes. $150 fee will be charged when making cancellations.

(e) Avianca: $150 fee will be charged when making changes. $50 ~ $200 fee will be charged when making cancellations (amount of fee depends on your route).

(f) British Airways: $55 fee will be charged when making any kinds of changes. You may forfeit the tax/fee you have paid when you used Avios to redeem for award tickets without paying any fees, and your Avios will be redeposited to your account.

(g) Cathay Pacific: $25 fee or 1,000 miles will be charged when making date change. $100 fee or 10,000 miles will be charged when making origin/destination change. $120 fee or 12,000 miles will be charged when making cancellations.

(h) Delta Air Lines: $150 fee will be charged when making any kinds of changes or cancellations. (You are not eligible to make changes within the 72 hrs of departure)

(i) Korean Air: $30,000 KRW fee will be charged when making changes for international flights. 3,000 miles will be charged when making cancellations.

(j) Singapore Airlines:

  • No fee when making date change of flights operated by Singapore Airlines.
  • $20 fee will be charged when making date change of flights operated by Star Alliance partners.
  • $20 fee will be charged when making origin/destination/cabin class changes.
  • $30 fee will be charged when making cancellations.
  • $75 fee will be charged when making cancellations within 24 hrs of departure.

(k) Southwest Airlines: No fee when making changes/cancellations.

(l) United Airlines: $75 fee will be charged when making changes/cancellations before 60 days of departure. $125 fee will be charged when making changes/cancellations within 60 days of departure.
