[News] American Express Membership Rewards Has Added Avianca LifeMiles as Transfer Partner

American Express (Amex) Membership Rewards points program just got a little more valuable with the addition of a new 1:1 airline transfer partner: Avianca LifeMiles! LifeMiles will be Amex Membership Rewards’ 18th airline and hotel partner. Amex Membership Rewards is the second transferable points program to add LifeMiles, as Citi ThankYou Rewards program added LifeMiles as a partner in November 2017. Now it joins the other Star Alliance frequent flyer programs which partner with Amex Membership Rewards, including:

  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • ANA Mileage Club
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

LifeMiles is a fantastic Star Alliance program. I use them for premium cabin awards on airlines like Lufthansa, Asiana, EVA Air, and Thai Airways. Lifemiles has No fuel surcharges and a reasonable award chart. Here are a few examples of one-way premium cabin redemption rates:

  • US to Europe in business class for 63,000 miles
  • US to Europe in first class for 87,000 miles
  • US to Southeast Asia in business class for 78,000 miles
  • US to North Asia in first class for 90,000 miles

In addition, it offers short-haul economy awards within the United States starting at just 7,500 miles one-way. What also makes LifeMiles a great program is that they allow one-way award tickets, they don’t impose fuel surcharges, and partner airline awards can be booked directly through their website. Furthermore, LifeMiles has be famous for its cheap mileage sales, with rates for buying miles sometimes as cheap as 1.35 cents per mile. However, LifeMiles doesn’t always have access to all the same award space that other Star Alliance programs do. So you’ll want to do an online search to make sure the type of redemption you’re looking at is eligible before transferring your Amex Membership Rewards points to LifeMiles.

Anyway, More options for your points and miles are always good, and this addition is especially good for Amex Membership Rewards. There are some circumstances under which LifeMiles will represent a better value than KrisFlyer or Aeroplan. Therefore, Membership Rewards points just potentially became a lot more valuable for many American Express cardmembers.
